Piers or piles I reckon. Alder is the most under-rated wood out there I think. I'm cultivating as much as I can. It's a brilliant timber for many uses.

does alder have a red tinge round edge of cord and whitish in middle. if so have some in wood. one wood never came across before. is it a rare tree or does it like a paticular soil to grow in. the ones i have seen are poor specimens but are on a devide between chalk and clay gravel. and what can you use it for apart from burning be good to put it to good use got plenty of fire wood

Yes, the sap will go red when cut. Fresh logs look like they are bleeding and they dry a nice orange colour sometimes. Alder is great for adding nitrogen to the ground and makes a perfect pioneer species for ash coppice. Also coppices very well in itself. If submerged it will never rot. Great firewood and good for charcoal plus a whole load of other applications as mentioned above such as cloggs / brush heads etc.

It grows fast and straight and splits easily and predictably. I love it myself.

Driving to a Job today saw a stack of alder lengths were about 4m x 15-18inch any one know what this would be used for.

A chap I felled for once exported some butts to Norway where it was used for furniture. Although it looks fantastic orange it dries to an uninteresting grey-buff

clogs and underwater piers, Alder lasts indefinatley when submerged.

Venice is built on Alder.

Also makes really good charcoal, it was the best charcoal for the carbon element of gunpowder. Hence Aldershot.
