Beech thin and crown lift

Had a nice early start today 5.50 get up and a 1.5hr drive to site. Spec was 15% reduction,thin and crown lift on 3 of the trees and a 4th was to be taken down and the logs to be split on site.

 

 

Unfortunately didn't get any before pics but have a few afters. Nice load of pure chip with no leaf

thin looks good coz you can hardly tell you have been on a 15% thin - like it should be

Great job! Just curious. I spoke to a tree officer today who said that Beech trees don't respond well to thinning, crown-lifts/reductions etc which I hadn't heard before - has anyone else?

its a dogma thats been doing the rounds for eons, and utter bull:thumbdown:

Surely there must be some book evidence to back this up. I can't find any reference to Beech tree pruning don'ts. It does sound like Bull! Is this something we have to accept from an official or can we challenge it?

there is some justification but it tends to be sunscald, which is predominant on beech having a sunny aspect (south facing) and being over pruned.

 

I was told recently by one Member that to chalenge accepted wisdom one has to be a moron, so up to you who you chalenge and how, dont take my comments seriously, I am a moron!

Round where I was born, in the tropical sunny Far East...of the Netherlands, beech trunks are often clad in hessian after a decent crown lift.

This is on long avenues where the difference in sun on the trunks is quite a lot after the work though.
