Just starting up a small/tiny little sideline. I have the opporunity to make up my own kindling. The only outlay I have is the netted bags and my time. I have been toying with the idea for bout 2 months and have finally decided to do it.

Few questions: Does this sell in the summer?

What prices?

Volumes/weights?

steve, if you know someone that has a saw mill, ask them for the off cuts..

this is what i do... its tinder dry and clean... so theres no need to fork out for machines..(only a good saw bench)

cant get enough off it in the winter,as it sells like hot cakes..

summers a poor time bbq time..

sell mine in compost bags for £3.50

  • 5 months later...

I have about 3cu metres of kiln dried off cuts coming in each week some pieces are 300x230x100

various other sizes. I was thinking of buying a big dewalt mitre saw a 718 or similar to trim it down and hire a kindlet machine. Some bits look a bit big for kindling ie 200x50x50 but too much work to reduce. What do think

mitre saws are a cheap way to reduce the size...:001_smile:

would it not be cost effective to buy a second hand kindlet machine??

just a thought

We buy kindling wholesale, £2 for a net that holds approx 5kg (ie 40p/kg) and aim to retail at £1/kg in nets that hold approx 2-2.5kg (although they wont be sold by weight!)

Currently storing softwood to make own kindling next year, will probably hire a machine for a couple of weeks and process as much as possible.

B&Q selling kindling last year £1.98 for 1.5kg

The only other thing to be aware of is your source of wood. Off-cuts from sawmills are not classed as waste so no problem - offcuts from other sources such as construction or manufacturing industries are likely to be classed as waste by the Environment Agency, so be careful! (or check with EA first)
