Exploring Forest of Dean

Whilst really suffering from the worst case of man flu I decided to book a weekend away for my 40th in August. Have found somewhere to stay which is in Clearwell, about 7 miles from Monmouth. So I'm looking for any suggestions for areas to go which are good for veterens (trees) or woodland archaeology from anyone who lives nearby or knows the area.

 

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Symonds Yat rock is a must visit if your in the area the views are spectacular , after your visit there take the car and park by the saracens hotel and walk along the side of the river until you come to a swing bridge , cross over the swing bridge and head into a camp site called the biblins , go past the old house called biblins lodge and keep walking down the side of the river until you come to the old salmon house that part of the forest is the most enchanting place in the wye valley in my opinion , trees trees trees and more trees from start to finish .. If I was visiting I would of stayed at biblins lodge in the heart of the forest , good luck .

That's such a beautiful area - my Ma started out woodland surveying up there. Lady Park wood. Nice, exclosure now, full of wild garlic. Good bit of ancient woodland above the river.

Is biblins lodge still there? I can remember staying there as a scout over twenty years ago.

Yeah the lodge is owned by Glos county council and is well popular. It's in use all year round and well worth revisiting if you get the chance, cheers,

Yes I would love to come and have another look around one day, I've got some very happy childhood memories of the forest.
