I always thought it was good idea to never tow a trailer that weighed more than 75% of the weight of the towing vehicle regardless of licences/weight limits of vehicles etc etc.

Thats caravans. My disco weighs 1700kg but pulls 3500kg of trailer about ok.

That's pretty wrong, firstly there is no such thing as a standard driving licence because what you can do depends on when you passed your test.

 

Pre 97 licence holders can tow whatever the vehicle is rated to, all others are restricted to 750kg unless you do a trailer test

 

I passed after 97 and what I said is pretty much the same as what Kev said.
