Climbing walls

Anyone made a climbing wall....?

My little boy and his friend have just started out at an indoor wall and I thought I'd make one at home for them to practice on, strictly belayed top rope stuff obviously.....

I have a nice south facing wall at the side of the house, probably 3m x 5m which will be ideal, no windows etc.

Holds are easy, going to pick up a few sets of screw on holds and plug and screw them to the bricks, but the top rope anchor concerns me.....

I'm thinking my best bet is to through bolt a pair of stainless anchors with integral rings onto the oak wall plate and fix some galv straps back in the loft.

I've only managed to find one place online to buy the anchors.... Anyone recommend anywhere....?

Going to screw a few onto the ascent as well so that I can lead climb to install the belay top rope as well. Presumably little rawl bolts would be the best solution for this....

Thoughts, suggestions etc appreciated, and photos of your own walls too :thumbup1:

Cheers

Simon

Your ideas seem fine to me. I set climbing walls up inside one of our barns. Sank caving bolts into what ever I found, none have come away after 23 years! Remember the holds, on the whole, are experiencing shear forces.

Most of the holds can be rotated to change the grip so plan for the wall's evolution as the climbers improve. The top anchors need only be safe and rope-friendly - the simpler the better. Depending upon safety when unattended, the wall might be left with a light line through the top anchors so that climbing rope can be put in place from the ground.

Why not just make a bouldering wall that way there's no chance of them climbing high when your not around. My bro made a tower of pain in his back garden for bouldering training on. Its a brilliant idea we had a climbing wall at my parents house when i was little, we also used to abseil out the attic window and srt back up

I recently brought a "climbing wall" well a load of ply painted with sandy paint and some with tee nuts (off ebay for about £8). Planning on a small tower or round the shed. Having the tee nuts means you can easily change the wall. I'm going to keep it bouldering height so kids will be less likely to break their necks and can use it without supervision.
