There are a couple of assumptions on my part here and I may be wrong but reading original and subsequent posts/replies I have the picture in my mind of an old/second hand machine, with little or no knowledge of working life history which occasionally gets pulled out of the barn when needed but is otherwise left idle for long periods and LOLER is not even considered. An owner operator without much tech experience, no user manual and no warranty / main dealer support.

I hope that is, at least in part, very much the wrong impression - if not, this sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

If it were me, and I was going up in it, I’d either get it into a credible lift shop for an overhaul & LOLER or I’d get rid. There can be no middle ground / DIY / cost or corner cutting with platforms.
