Hi David, 

 

Its near a young tree in the grass under mature oaks and otherwise it is a closest to a mulch circle with woodchip. I saw the same on top of a pile of woodchip on the site come to think of it.

I can’t really tell to be honest but it ‘looks’ like a dried out slime mold like a Fuligo sp

Yeah that's the charmingly named Dog's Vomit Slime Mould Fuligo septica.?

Not to be confused with the similar Dog's Vomit Slime Mould Mucilago crustacea which occurs in grass.
