Whilst carrying out a Dmp on this Red Oak hosting quite a lot of Ganoderma resinaceum, I nearly squashed these little guys.

Not Id'd them as yet.

They're growing on a butress root, which appears functional & sound.

 

Possibly micorrhyzal, but due to proximity to woody material could be saprophytic.

 

 

Obviously, there is heart wood decay evident, but there is also associated strong adaptive butress growth, Tree is now down for reduction.

Found this today on a big Ash in Kensington Gardens. The fruiting body was quite moist to the touch and had what appeared to be last years fruiting bodies in the foreground.

 

What is it? What effect does it have on wood?

Inonotus hispidus I'd imagine.

 

Relatively localised white rot, often causes limb failure.

Out back between the Round pond, the Old Earthworks and The Elfin Oak. Middle of those 3 points. Very busy area.

 

I'll ask him. Quite high in tree.....barely visible from the ground unless you knew it was there. Worked on the tree taking weight off the opposite side of tree due to severe lion tailing as a result of some shocking tree work in the past.

Hi,

 

Spotted this on a old Oak today whilst out for a walk. Managed to climb up and get a few out of balanced shots. I think it looks like Daedalea quercina (maze-gill). Cheers Steve ps last shot is a different tree.

Been keeping an eye on an Oak in the local park. Swollen butt and some crown dieback. The other day this lttle fellow appeared!
