Gymnopilus junonius on Ash

.

Nice pics, David

How do you recognise Gymnopilus junonius from all other similar looking species (a lot!)? I'm not very familiar with this species, alltough I apparently took a picture of one (as Gerrit told me)

Tom,

By reading the description on Soortenbank of Gymnopilus junonius and comparing it with the few other species with rusty brown spores and a ring fruiting on living or dead trees, which are not "a lot".

Thanks for the hint, Gerrit, will do that.

Once you've seen a fungus 'in real life' and you're familiar with it, it's much easier to recognise it afterwards, even in a different setting or if it looks totally different. But untill that day (with only 'book knowledge' of a certain fungus species and without being familiar with the 'tips and tricks'), a lot of fungi just look the same, I'm afraid :blushing:

Abbreviations are part me being lazy & part me trying to get the great fung watchers to work a little for the id's

No such luck I'm afraid. Match test produced nothing but a smoulder from the surface, and no waxy layer was present. The top crust was very hard, and the flesh was fibrous and corky. I think it's one of the microscope duo...

The tree has more brackets just starting to form all round the base. Also lots of little brown mushrooms all round the root zone, possibly connected, possibly not. I will try and post pics later, as I have not tried to id them yet.

Here you go...

Three fungi on recently felled (last 12 months) birch stump.

Chondrostereum purpureum, a couple of little Mycenas? and a jelly fungus, young purple jelly disc perhaps? probably not...

Last three shots two days later...
