Arrr, so its Phellinus igniarius, not Fomes fomentarius! So would this make any difference to the way you would manage the tree? Is the other Ganaderma? I have looked at the other 2 things you wrote, it doesn't look like the pictures i am looking at! :-(

 

 

I understand that both Fomes & P. ignarius both cause delignification, which in turn can lead to a potentialy serious soft rot.

 

As already stated further investigation is waranted.

 

Pics of the second bracket not particularly helpful, host & location suggest one of the big G's

 

 

Where have you looked at 'the other two things' ?

Hi Guys, this is my first post. I have been a long time reader of Arb Talk though:001_smile:. Does anyone know what this bracket is, ive been wrecking my brain all day. Its on an Apple tree.

Variations in Ganoderma applanatum on the same Tree (Fagus)

 

Without the provision of an on site laboratory to nail the spore size :sneaky2:, the identification is based on the old chestnuts of crust depression, wasp galls, & thin margin.

 

Guessing the leprosy on the second one is some form of galling.
