Help needed with Hilux alternator fault please

I have a mk 3 diesel hilux single cab for getting about the muddy yard. But it discharged its new batteries a few weeks ago. At the same time half the dash lights stopped working and the truck will not operate the glow plugs. When sat with everything switched off its draining 1/2 an amp out of the batteries. If I disconnect the small connector on the alternator the dash lights and glow system starts again. If I disconnect the near side battery neg the alternator relay clicks and also the dash lights work. All very strange especially without a set of drawings. Has any one had these problems and was it a regulator or an alternator.

I've got a mk5 hilux single cab and had the same problem, at first thought it was the batteries as they were the original ones so replaced them which worked for a week before they got completely drained turns out the alternator was knackered replaced with a reconditioned one and it's as good as new.

Thanks for your replies. I was thinking alternator diodes so new alt about £120 external regulator if I get it wrong is about £75 for a genuine one. I only use it for a yard cart but its ideal getting through the 2 ft of mud at the moment thinking of selling soon if anyone wants a single cab with new alternator
