Friction Hitch Sticking

A natural progression from the prussik is the Blakes hitch Blakes Hitch - Knots Guide | Arbtalk.co.uk

It is very similar in use, but has less tendency to bind. If you try it out, you should be aware that you should be using a rope of similar diameter to your main line (i.e. 13 mm). For experimenting, you can use the end of the standing part of your main line.

The much maligned prisik still has a lot going for it but you don't want it binding during an assessment.

We all use a Schwabian. I messed about with klemheist for a while because I got fed up with prusik sticking, bt I couldn't justify going over to the swabian because I thought it would need a fancy wee short bit of rope with two spliced eyes. Then I realised it can be done with a simple double fishermans rusik loop, costing about £2. See attached photos. We had a competition at work, can tie one of these knots and set it in 15 seconds. Miles better than prusik.

Meant to add, it is uideirectional and can't be tied in the middle of a rope like a prusik can. The closer to the spliced eye you are the easier it is to do the 3 wraps in the 2nd 3rd and 4th pictures. Sorry about quality of pics, they are fresh from the living room floor with a wet bit of rope that's in from the truck tonight to get dried.

Here it is, set. Try it, you'll never go back to a prusik again.

A wee tip, when tying youyr future prusik loops for use with a Schwabian, use a bit of cord that's about 10cm shorter than your usual.

Why dont you just tie two fisherman's you dont need splices ? it would be much easier and you can tie it anywhere

I never get the aches in my elbows anymore that i used to get after a hard days climbing on a wet prussik

There is every place for a prussik as much as hitch climber, street tree re pollards and small tree reductions, prussik and handsaw. Bigger open canopy and lots of upping and downing then gadgets great!

Different climbing systems aside... You can only cut as quick as your eyes and brain allow you to, I love a gadget but prussiks have their place always will do.
