The tallest plane is in bryanston, blandford Dorset. There is also a huge plane where I live in mere Wiltshire that has a massive spread. I will try and get pictures tomorrow.

 

That's the one I was thinking of. They climbed it on kids TV last year, one bloke spent the night in the top

Been digging through some pictures and found these. The Preston Twins, Preston Park, Brighton, pictures from Halloween 2011.

 

They're regarded as the largest and oldest surviving elms in Europe, possibly the world.

 

According to the http://www.thetreeregister.org they are each 638cm dbh

 

Also on the same site there are two other elms that are purported to be 1175 and 1162cm dbh, so perhaps the twins aren't the largest around. One in Ireland, one at Hampton Court Palace.

 

The tree on the left is a ragged old chimney, hollow to the floor.

 

According to National Elm Collection - Brighton & Hove City Council the trees are home to a colony of White-letter Hairstreak butterflies, which are dependant on elm.

Adam is someone recording locations, species, height and girth?

 

Think dan has all the info from Saturday but yes I've been keeping note of every 100% accurate info we have, only one I need sorting bar this weekend is the privit dan was up in Lincoln, really need a positive ID and a measure up mate! :thumbup1:
