Not a particular fan of football or rugby myself but could someone explain what eye gouging is please?

 

Must be a technical term because if you took that literally it sounds downright dangerous and certainly should have no place in any sport.

The French started it, (another good reason for invading), in the old days if you were hanging on to the ball in a maul you might find someone giving your bollocks a squeeze to make you release it, that was bad enough, but if I was eye gouged I would want to shoot the barsteward who did it. Certainly not needed on a rugby pitch, the game is physical enough without things like that.
