Field Maple

i've been meaning to do this for ages but i finally got round to counting the rings of this field maple and got 188 on a board that was not the center board.

 

educated guess is that it's about 200-220. not bad for a sub 2' tree.

 

i got bought a jewelers lens for xmas and needed it to date this at the rings are so close together.

Hey Steve, these are all looking great. I love this wood. Made some boards for Christmas gifts for family from it, lovely to work and comes up a treat. Forgot to take pics amongst the seasonal excitement. Doh!

 

Table? Sounds like an interesting project. Let's do something. Let me know what your thoughts are.

looking at the great beauty of these boards i envisage putting two together side by side as a top.

 

if there is enough then it can be used for legs but i was thinking of another wood for legs. sycamore?

Lovely wood that. I've found that even in field maple that looks really burr-y on the outside, the burrs don't penetrate very deep into the timber.

right, i've come to the conclusion that i'm addicted to taking pics of this spectacular timber but i don't care...

 

i've started to finish this beautiful platter that is about 19 1/2" x 1 3/4".

 

the first coat of danish has gone on the back and its started to really bring out the colour. i'm going to try to build up a few layers and buff it to a high sheen.

 

the figure is extra amazing in one corner as that is part of a crotch.

Table project - like the design you sent me. Thought we could do some kind of arrangement along the lines of I provide wood for three tables, get one made in return, or something similar. What do you think?
