I wouldn't recommend side slopes, but they perform well going straight up and down a slope, I have carried stems weighing as much as the machine up near 45 degree slopes

Filling the tyres with water helps a huge amount with stability, but don't forget to also add anti freeze

Out of interest, which model have you got there Dean? Thinking of hiring one for a job and its a toss up between that or an excavator & grab for clearing up the brash.

Mines a csf multione which is equivalent to the 635 I think, the biggest one, I think it's the same as the one with the grab in the photo above, that grab it has on is the exact one I have and they are very handy too, will scoop up brash and pick up big lumps of timber

Edit, mines a bit bigger than the 635, it's 50hp! Oh and the excavator will make an awful muddy mess, but if your on rough ground that wouldn't matter??

Yes, but I can't make too much mess or people won't be happy - SSSI etc.

It's just I know an excavator will work from experience and it's a gamble spending £600 to hire one for the week if it doesn't do what I need.

If it was a flat area I would be more tempted but because its around old workings and on a hill I'm just not sure!!

Might go and see if I can have a look around one and then make a judgement.

Cheers for the advice.
