It appears to be a heavy year for tree related fatalities.

A reflection of the turbulent weather we have had here in the UK from early winter through spring, summer and now.

Sad indeed, it seems a group were camping underneath it which seems bizarre given the weather...

My local radio station, BBC stated, "living in a tent" and given how many homeless live in woods around here, this is not a surprise. Also have the "Glamping" craze in this area, posh camping amongst woodland settings, popular at any time of year. So it doesn't really surprise me, either way. Along with the desire from some to save trees infested with rot and fungi nowadays.

In the guardian report above it appears to suggest it was a large spruce in the first instance and then refers to an old oak at the next mention

I guess the tragedy of death completely overrides the reason for the trees failure, in this case. Storm conditions, extremely heavy rainfall are enough of a cause, regardless of the health of the tree. Sad news anyway.
