Has anyone tried filling their rayburn with wood chip?

I was thinking of chipping some clean, seasoned, small diameter hardwood and fill the coal scuttle up to try it, I figure it should bun slowly as their is little air gaps. Is their any reason why this would prove stupid, or dangerous?

I tried it in an old burner we had, It worked well mostly then a couple of times I was sat with door open on a freezing frosty night sweating in my underwear as the got carried away and refused to calm down.

I have burnt some in our woodburner, bearing in mind this was chip I had dried in the oven (to check moisture content) sometimes it burns from the outside like a log, but sometimes it gets hot inside and smoulders which must be less efficient and probably would soot up the flue eventually
