College fun, and Red woods.

any line has to go round the back of the trunk, there are no single anchor points until halfway up AT LEAST, the branches go straight down. Theres no way I could throw a line up and over a branch, round the trunk, over another couple of branches and back down.

Borrow my Big-Shot some time Andy. :001_smile:

Oh Contrare, my anchorly challenged friend :001_smile:

Calling all Big shot users !

60 feet is not out of range, by any stretch of the imagination.

If you've not used one, organise a demo with a local and be prepared to be amazed.

Technical challenge ahoy.

.

I don't mean out of reach, height wise. Reaching a branch 60 feet up isn't going to achieve anything. Thats not an anchor point on these welly's, you wouldn't even be able to set up a single line. I find it hard to put it into words what I mean....The rope needs to go round the trunk and back down the same side. Maybe the Sequoia are different in that respect but on the wellies this was the case. Apologies, I know people like to frown upon use of gaffes in these cases, I'm not even that keen on wearing them.

Maybe it's just me but I feel comfortable knowing I have made the effort to change my climbing style once I was able to stand...I believe I made every effort to cause minimal damage. I think I will keep all spike related comments to myself in future..:blushing:

This is going to make matters more confusing or help, i think what your trying to say is, you cant get the throwline around the main trunk, which would be safer than climbing a single limb, where there is a chance of either the branch snapping or the rope making its way to the centre of the branch, or working it way off the branch.

I think im on your wave length Andy.

pretty much mate, 5 blokes could join hands and you wouldn't reach round the trunk so throwlines are pretty much useless for getting a rope up there, The other tree that I sat on top of in 05 is even worse. The branches are at such an angle that you can't even send you anchor round the trunk as it will just slip down, you couldn't even get a foothold on most of them so you can understand what chance a rope has of remaining in place, none...it's a challenge, but one that is overcome by the use of spikes.

Hopefully the Sequoia's that tribal is due to do won't need such measures, as the climbing is so much more enjoyable without them, but to get to the point of enjoyment I needed spikes.

I could possibly arrange a climbing get together at the site if anyone has a different method, I genuinely am interested in methods of ascent of difficult tree's.

Alloy ladders and ratchet straps!!!

Do it Fred Dibbner style!!

That reminds me...we did a job before christmas and a firm was clearing up a horse chestnut right next door. Turned out to be a building firm who were due to build an extension and the tree was in the way so to save money they felled it themselves, 80ft tree with wide spread...big job. They hired in a mewp and spent a few days nibbling away at it until they had reached the limits of the mewps reach...out came the ladders..can you guess what happened next..?:001_tongue:
