Walnut advice/tips

Hello tree people,

I have been asked to do a reduction on a walnut tree, and as i have no experience of this trees likes and dislikes I was hoping that you could give any advice on them. time of year to cut etc.

I have recommended a program of 2-3 years, with 15-20% this year and similar in 1-2 years time. to allow epicormic recovery. I am a bit nervous as reductions are not my normal MO.

The reason for reduction is light blocking and proximity to a road, the owner has been told to prune back or the council will with a hedge flail!

They really really don't like it, even light reductions, so prepare the customer for it to die. I saw a huge walnut killed off by a reduction where the largest cut was no more than 3ins across.

Pruning time is mid-summer, cut the thinnest branches you can get away with and hope.

Sorry

Alec

Now is the best time if year to prune them. At other times they can bleed to death. I would be mire inclined to split the tree into 1/3 or 1/4's, and prune each section consectatively over the next 3-4 years.

Sent from my Galaxy arse using tupping talk.

Check ALL the simple things first.

I always understood it to be mid/late summer for walnut as the sap rises early in the year ??
