A Fungal/Algae relationship, This is a first I've came across this type of organism :001_smile: I guess it's unidentifiable which is which? :confused1:

O.k we need to cover some basics here dont we!:001_smile:

No, what your describing now is a lichen, the terms Crustose and resupinate are "forms" not species type

If something is shaped a certain way for example if its branching and fine it may be called Foliace, or upright may be fastigiate, scientific terms and latin, take some getting used to, but get used to them.

You have a resupinate, crustose fungi

was a hard day today but I had spotted a tree in the valley below our work site that had the familiar dense tip growth of Acer campestre AKA the field maple. Nothing unusual you might think in bucks in the chilterns but this tree looked to be as big as a fully mature oak so come lunchtime I found myself feeling the urge for a little Ancient/Veteran tree hunting!

I dont know what it is about big old trees and the potential for fungi being hosted but I can be absolutley shattered and suddenly find bags of vroom for a quick bimble when something is screaming "come say hello" at me, I bloody love s it i dos, and I am so glad I did, because not only was this a massive field maple of 2 hugs or 12 feet circumference there was more veteran hedgerow ash trees than you could shake a stick at!

I will be going back many times to document the ecologies taking refuge in this little valley, there is so many opportunities for fungi and other wildlife im sure to get some amazing days here.

such a cool site, one to get logged for the ancient tree forum too. Enjoy, I certainly did!
