Hamadryad- trees, ecology & FUNGI!

Had an amazing day today, fungi everywhere in the plot we was working on. What really surprised me was the number of fungi in a young overgrown Norway spruce wood which was intended as christmas trees many years ago but when the silver (Nordmans) came in the market wasnt there and these grew on. I've never paid much attention to such woodlands, always sticking to my Ancient woods of mixed deciduous mainly Oak and beech types. I will remain more open minded in future.

The number and size of the Wood Blewitts (Lepista nuda) was remarkable, many many hundreds of trooping ring formed groups, also similar clitocybe nebularis (Cloudy funnels) a few Shaggy parasols (macrolepiota rhacodes) a very pretty species of Mycena which I havent identified as yet and the Red funnellike Lepist inversa.

Plenty of P. squarosus amoung the aspens, poplars and apples in the orchard too, some Pleurotus dryinus on the scared Poplars, great day all in. the fungi have come late, and come in force!

Do you know about the European Landscape convention? just starting to get to grips with it myself as I seek protection measures for OUR landscapes.

With the chemical agriculture, importation of pests and pathogens (see Chalara) I am looking at the means of forcing protection under the Law.

Seems they still recommend surrounding trees be felled and destroyed to contain an outbreak of Chalara fraxinea, I really dont think this is wise, we shouldnt be taking out trees that may potentialy survive

This fascinating article was just posted on a Facebook page by Jill Butler, thought I would put it here for anyone interested in such things. Its basically the discovery of an ancient stone map in a cave of its local surroundings with good hunting and forage potential. I find this sort of thin awesome.
