The mods will be watching our little exchange Mr Treequip ... they know I can get a little bit feisty when in red wine territory.

Why don't we call it quits and go meditate under a tree together.. or something of a friendly and peaceful nature:001_smile:

You have that the wrong way around, if its noisy with the clutch pedal down that’s the release bearing, if its noisy at idle with the clutch pedal up that’s the layshaft bearings, which squares with the whining noise under load.

It’s probably a gearbox problem rather than the clutch….Sorry about the bad news:blushing:

According to ashcroft the noise with the pedal up is the springs on the friction plate and is a common problem on landrovers but nothing to worry about.

The springs can make noise but its usualy chattering noise at idle, as the springs take up the load they compress and can't move so the noise stops, you reported a whining noise under load, the best you will get with a knackered clutch plate is a bit of a clunk in transition, until it gives up and you rip the centre out of it. it won't make a whining noise under load.

The point I was trying to make is that you said

but release bearing noisy when foot off clutch................

That can't be the release bearing because it only engages when you have your foot on the clutch, it can be and usually is the layshaft bearings.

Thanks. Still haven't got it to garage yet loads still need delivering!

Gear changing clunk worse but higher pitched as though not attached to something? Whine all the time and gear change at times can be sloppy. Will take it in tomorrow so we will all know. Anyway found ash dieback today in the wood i'm thinning.
