i havent climbed in the solomons, but do own a pair of scarpa. to be honest i havent climbed in them a great deal but i did opt for them during the summer when i had to re-reduce some very skinny whippy limes. they made the job so much easier just being able to get a foot grip in the tiniest little knobbles in the trunk.

go to any of the isa climbing comps, and you'll be hard pushed to find someone not wearing a pair, i think that says a lot.

ive been wearing my salomans all day reducing a lime and beech tree, and they are lovely to climb in, the only thing ive got with them is that they are very soft around the edges of your feet and i know the scarpas are more robust as they are designed as a scambling/climbing boot. size wise did you go smaller or slightly bigger steve

I've had a pair for years. Very good boots.....BUT Your feet will either be 'Scarpa' feet or they wont. Saw them at the AA last year and they're very cheep compared to what they used to cost.

am i right in thinking they are slightly wide. if so thats great because my feet are wider

Scarpa ascent...a boldering boot...but dont let that put you off.....I bought a pair for tree work and strangely used them boldering out of the box...They are designed to tie up tight round the toe....in the way the climbing ( rock boots ) are......As a rock climber b4 tree work, you will get used to the tight fit... we used to reckon..." no pain, no gain " in the early "eb's".....They are very flexible really....worthwhile imo but they wear out quite quiclky.....I thought Scarpa has dropped them from their catalogue...?

Hi FOlks

Just alittle history on the Pro Ascent boot. About a year ago Scarpa stopped producing the Pro Ascent for whatever reason, I don't know. So if you call a Scarpa dealer or even the Scarpa main importer you'll find that, unless thay hold old stock, they won't have any. Along comes Freeworker ( German arb dealer) to the rescue; they brokered a deal whereby Scarpa will produce a certain amount of pairs per year for them. At 224 euro per pair including tax they are rather expensive at the current exchange rate although I see that Honeys display a cost of £130 on their website. The original boot was known as Mescalito 10 odd years ago, long before they became popular in our field. AKU produce a boot that is almost identical to the Mescalito, which I feel was a better design for treework, which had a slightly stiffer vibram sole & last a good deal longer.

It's difficult to not sound like this is an ad for AKU but they are more than worth a mention & they have a goretex lining for those not adverse to a little water resistance.

Cheers

Nod
