i dont think there is an easy option for upgrading the 070/090 filter.

Saws that had a cutoff saw counterpart like the 051 and 076 its just a case of putting the high-top filter and cover on. 090 however, you would likely have to fabricate or modify a k&n style filter to fit, and i would be concerned with fitment, and knocking it off/damaging it in use.

I reckon a saw that was many folks weapon of choice for oldgrowth redwood felling and processing for the best part of 25yrs, should be able to handle the dust of occassional milling without too much trouble.

I shouldn't worry about a bit of dust under the filter Andy - my MS880 seems to have much more than the 090 after milling and seems to cope with it.

Things like,

  • Letting the saw idle 30 secs every 4 ft down a plank
  • Idling for a minute or 2 with gentle revving after finishing a plank
  • Do not just switch off at the end of a plank.
  • Don't mill the last board in a heap of sawdust - just firewood it or lift it onto something higher
  • Regular air filter cleaning

The biggest thing I've found is to allow the saw time to cool and getting the air flow over the fans - not so much with your 090 as I think the older saws had more metal in and revved lower so less heat build up.

IIRC it is possible to mod the Stihl saws with an air filter system off the Stihl Paddys motorbikes (disc cutters) to help with cleaner running? I can't find anything about this, or is it my imagination, or is it not even necessary?

the yanks run big saws on a v stack with either a foam filter or k&n filter fixed with a jubilee clip...watch this clip it shows the v stack thing-e-o and how the filter fixes to it...
