Sharpening hedgetrimmers

After all these years of struggling to find someone who can actually do this properly, I have made do with files to keep the edge. But this is time consuming, laborious, tedious, boring, and I'm never altogether satisfied with the overall result.

So, I bought some diamond sharpening filing stones for my Not-A-Dremel, and I am chuffed with the results. Every trimmer is now cutting beautifully, I am well impressed with myself for my ingenuity. An hour well spent getting all trimmers back to perfection, happy days:thumbup:

 

I always sharpen mine with a small electric grinder with good results, but i like the idea of the sharpening stones you mention, now could you let another secret out? How much and where from? cheers:thumbup1:

Its the electric fence poles that get me, every-one seems to leave them propped up in hedges, all rusty brown and just big enough for the cutter to have a bite... aw NUTS!

The "stones" are diamond type, for sharpening chainsaws, so you get a pack of all sizes and a handle for IIRC around £13. They fit in the Dremmel type tools, so are a powered sharpener. I used the largest sized stone for the trimmers. Gives a nice smooth sharpen, easy to guide and get right. Found them on the Bay a couple of months back.

I use one of these Black & Decker Ka900e Powerfile Belt Sander , B/DKA900E at D&M Tools doesn't take long to sharpen a set of blades up,

I sharpen in the region of 100 hedgetrimmers each year and have tried many methods.

 

The method that suits me best and that I have used for the last 10 yrs is a 4.5 inch angle grinder with a 1.0mm cutting disc.

 

I probably should not reccomend this, as a cutting disc should not be used for grinding, but they work really well, and I have never had one break in use. Safety goggles are essential.
