Soft wood, volume per tonne.

I have been selling soft wood logs for a while and want to pay the owner of the logs a fair price for his timber that I have used and sold.

I process into cubic meter bags, season in the bags. I am aware of the 1.3 - 1.5 cube of hardwood to the tonne, what is a fair figure for softwood?, 1.5 or a bit higher?..

Thanks

Depends on species as sitka is light per tonne but things like scots and some pines are v heavy

Scots, larch, spruce in the main. Judging by the way cubes of hard and soft roll off the back of the delivery trailer I would have said that dry the soft is maybe two thirds the weight of hard.

This is difficult because there is variation between different stands and parts of the tree. FC mensuration branch did a lot of work on this in the late 60s, from their booklet 39 of 1975 they suggest white softwoods ( spruce, fir hemlock) have basic densities in the low 300skg/m3% e.g. sitka 350kg/m3, whilst pines with more lignin and heartwood 400kg/m3 and the dark resinous woods like douglas and larch 450kg/m3 whereas oak and beech are around 550kg/m3. If the woods are all at the same moisture content and the same stacking density then the ratios of weights should be in proportion to these basic densities.
