Radios for long distance

Thing is it isn't the radio set that's the issue, it's the frequencies you use that make the difference. Ex Police Motorolas have a range of around 3-4 miles on UHF, or in dense trees, I've had about 2 miles between operators max. Now using VHF will improve this considerably, well I've found it improved considerably. Cheap PMRs will not punch their way out of a paper bag, they don't have the power, you need commercial to have the ooomph, my handhelds run 5 watts PEP as standards, instead of about 100mWatt, and the mobile set is on low power at 25watts, going up to 50watts max. Running full power from here would make me readable over tens of miles, equivalen to the needs of taxi companies, obviously I do not need to run full power so I don't use it unnecessarily.

Bowman...simple to use....a bit of wee came out!

I used to use Motorola jobbies - can't remember the model - on a repeater network which was fine, as long as there were no trees in the way. Set to set the distance in woodland was about 200 metres.

Bowman won't work through thick woodland either. PRR probably wouldn't even reach shouting distance.

Bowman does work through thick wooded areas , as I was a rrb commander at 1 point and didn't have any probs in the uk Germany Poland

These look quite good, 4-5 mile range across the highlands apparently.yearly licence required.

MITEX UK - THE HOME OF TWO WAY RADIO (WALKIE TALKIE)

Those radios work in Argyle from sea level over the mountains into the forestry. PRR are shite! £75 for 5 year licence as below.

Ofcom | Ask us - Spectrum - What type of business radio licence would be the best for me?

I am considering getting some of these. You can get lots of headsets and mikes.

Irrelevant in this scenario as your not going to get one to use! Burst transmission next?:001_tt2:

So why post ur previous reply?

Which one?

RRB (via FFR) kit is hardly manpack kit. And did you have an antenna sticking up above the canopy?

I have a Clansmn PRC351, and on the same frequencies an ex Water Board rig, fraction of the price of the Clansman, delivers more bang for the buck, more frequency choice, digital programming and or computer programmable, seriously far better than the Forces offering, sorry to say. But obviously the needs of the military are different, for example you need to be able to change freqs with numb hands and so on, KISS and all that.

I use 10 hand held Motorrola's running a shoot, range we work at is usually no more than a couple of miles.

In my old business we used Motorrola's in vans, has some sets for oiver 20 years, with those you buy areas. In our home area ( Ariel on a mast near Luton) we could get from well south of Watford to Peterborough.
