Stihl battery bar

Dear Team, Has anyone fitted a solid Cannon, GB or other 3/8" carving bar to a Stihl MSA 160 battery saw? Is the fitting exactly the same as the bars that fit onto the small petrol models, or mains electric models such as the MSE 140 or 180? I appreciate I would need to change the sprocket drive on the motor to 3/8" from 1/4". It appears that such a sprocket is available for the saw. Advice and experiences on the unit and guide bars are very welcome! Many thanks - Peter

I thought it came with a 1/4 sprocket?

Jonsie from FR Jones tested one of their stihl carving bars on one for me as I liked the look of one for workshop use, it had the 1/4 sprocket as standard so the carving bar was fine apparently. Still haven't tried for myself but if in doubt speak to Jonsie.

Many thanks Simon. Yes you are correct it does come with a 1/4" drive as standard. But the 3/8" sprocket is an extra option.

 

Did you know which make of carving bar they tried on the motor?

It was a Stihl bar mate, I don't think they sell other carving bars. I would imagine they'd fit. Have a chat with Justin(jonsie). Rob D (chainsawbars) is worth talking to as well.

Hi Peter!

 

If you want to try one of the carving bars I'm sure it will fit on your saw (go for a dime tip) as they all have universal mounts.

 

But you want to keep the 1/4" drive sprocket as this is the one you want for a carving bar. You want this as to run the smaller finer dime tip bars you have to run 1/4" pitch chain. Get the Stihl carving chain as this is really the only carving ready chain available.

 

If it doesn't fit send it back! (but I'm pretty certain it will fit).

Thanks for the replies. I need to fit longer carving bars than 30 cm. Do you mean that the Dime and Quarter bars have different fittings? Over 30 to 35 cm lengths I understand they would need to be 0.05" gauges. Many thanks - Peter
