I did look at the rear mounted loader but the overall length of the thing plus the loss of the PTO etc put me off, It'll do about half a ton which in terms of timber is quite a big lump. With the winch on the back and the log grab on the front its a handy little tool.

Idly browsing for Holder skidders I come across this machine on a German arb site:

Compact forestry tractor the Warsaw Pact way, it seems. A couple of truck axles off a Robur, 40hp truck diesel, artic and oscillating, winch & blade, not much bigger than a top-end Carraro, good for 40deg. side slopes. DFU by name, 80s built.

A bit more Googling and there's one on Ebay Germany, heavily modded with a Unimog front loader, blade moved aft, Rotzler winch and beefed-up hydraulics.

At a glance, and leaving aside the likely spares nightmare, I'm thinking I want one just like that, with a 3pl (easily adapted from the blade hyds) and a PTO (less straightforward I guess). And maybe 50-60hp.

Is anything like this still being built?

I like that - looks like a smaller version of the old Timberjack skidder we had at Duncombe park for a while.

Not seen anything like that being built more recently but did see where someone had taken an alpine and removed all the bodywork and then built theire own tubular body/roll frame - not quite as heavy duty but more robust than from the factory.

Resurrecting an old thread. But I have a smallholding and wood in Carmarthenshire. Was looking at buying a second 4WD agricultural tractor but reckon because of the steepness of the land I may be better off with an Alpine tractor like a Goldoni.

What do people recon are the best makes or perhaps best bang per buck?

Thanks
