You'd be surprised at how strong beech is. Climbed a dead ash the other day and my spikes were smashing through about 6 inches of mulch. It was disintegrating. Thought better and Got bout 20ft up and tied a strop round it. Clipped the steel rope on and winched the tree over without a chainsaw going near it. I'll put pics up later on.
