simple question I'm after a 14mm lowering rope and was just wondering what is the difference between the samson stable braid and nystron? is the nystron worth the extra money?

Never used nystron, sounds similar to Yale Polydyne in terms of ability to absorb shock loads etc.

 

If you do lots of shock loading it might be worth it, but why would you get a 14mm rope for snatching lumps of timber?

good point would just get the 16mm out but i had a polydyne 14mm and loved it until my ground cut it in half, nice knowing it was always strong enough, i dunno lol

For good reason... the added stretch of a static line greatly reduces the shock load on the system. If the weakest part of the system is the tree and the climber is tied into the tree, the stretch in the line can be the difference between life and death.

I dont think you understand what a static line is. There is no added stretch in a static line, thats why its called static.

 

Anyway my point was that if you are snatching big lumps of timber you need a big rope, at least 16mm, buying a stretchy 14mm rope won't do the same job.

I would argue that a semi-dynamic 14mm rope would be able to handle shock loads (snatching) better than a static 16mm rope.

 

I'd be happy to dig out documentation for that claim, if you like

This is true but when snatching we need to account for heat fatique in the half hitch on dead eye sling and attachment to lump and a larger rope WILL outperform a smaller one.

I dont have any documentation though :001_tongue:
