nice job!! I reckon one of them is Ash from perhaps a fork of the branch to give the wide open twisted grain with a clever bit of light staining? As to the other haven't the foggyist!

For an experienced maker that's a good job but for a first attempt it is brilliant. Maybe olive ash and some cherry?

Combine the two posts you as good as nailed the main body.

Spalted olive ash with the butt section from the crotch of the tree.

Here are some pics of the capping. All from the same chunk of crotch.

keep my guns are at a mates house as there's nowhere suitable in my flat for a cabinet, if i remember next time im over there i'll get a pic, its pretty plain but part of the reason i bought it was cos of this quirky bit of history, was an old boy giving up shooting bought two off him the one with the table stock was his uncles he got back in the 50's so who knows how long ago the repair was done guns reconed to be about 80+ year old

I have two massive lumps of olive ash like that in the yard, I could probably get 40 blanks out of them! I had planned on doing the same and making a stock for my new rifle, in the end I decided that I just didn't have the time and so I am having one made out of a laminate blank.

I am doubting my decision now. The styling is not to my taste but I love the look of the timber, and there is no doubting the craftsmanship. Great Job!!
