This is a Scientifically speaking a very odd object.

First thing to consider here is that flint is as yet still of unkown origins! I.e they dont know how it is formed.

Then it cleary shows a sea urchin patterning, but is totaly flint inside, so whats the story?

going to be an interesting thread Gollu:grinning-smiley-003m

The fossil is the calcified skeleton of the sea urchin the Flint inside is quartz.

Nice find:thumbup1:

yea i found a 3d fossil of some shell in a flint from someones driveway the other day so they are not uncommon, looking also at the pics from Geoff's link it seems the sea urchin ones are quite common as well.

Great find nonetheless

Very interesting find indeed is that Gollum.

Would have said it was a defo for a sea urchin myself, but having seen the pics in Geoff's link, there are other examples of fossilised urchins found in flint so its a dead cert!

Thank you all for the replies.:thumbup1:

seems to be common in some places but not so in others.

I did think I had something rare but obviously not.
