the post will rot over time if they are in the ground we try and paint used engine oil on the bottom of the post thats in the ground lasts loads longer

Bradshaw Groundcare, have you looked into the legalities of using waste engine oil for treating wood? It's a criminal offence to allow waste oil to seep into the ground, and by painting it on wood that is then going into the ground that is exactly what you're doing. I know it works brilliantly for preserving wood, but from a professional point of view it's not something we would do.

Pedroski - The wood is not in the ground

The decking in the picture is built on top of a block wall, concrete floor and flags as said in my early post. if the post is in the ground and concreted in i see no problem giving them a lick of oil to help stopping them rot

I normally use a dry mix, post crete or a mix of both to give uprights good grounding. If the joists are going on the ground I use a roll of 4"dpc stapled to the timber edge that sits on the ground.

+1 to all above. my decking i used a nail gun mistake big time. used proper decking screws as boards just started to lift. if i was asked to do a decking screws all the time pre drilled so wood does not split. as for in concrete or out mine is big and i sat it on 2x2 granite paving slabs which i sat on concrete. as for treating i use bedec barn paint preserves and gives colour very good product
