Oddly for someone with reasonable cognative skills and mechanical understanding, I am dammn all good at buying second hand equipment.

Generally because I allow my heart to rule my head.

And I am even worse at ever selling,

So iffen I was going to look at a Sanderson 247 tomorrow, 1985, Ford engined, with 5200 hrs declared.

Anything specific I need to look out for?

I am not a great fan of Sanderson had one for two years and snapped the chassis in half then 6 months later snapped the rear axle. But I may have been unlucky. Had the jcb more than 6 years without problems. I would make sure the engine is not porus and check the hr meter is still working.

Don,t be wasting you time looking at these old machines. Get yourself up to the Balmoral Show and get the cheque book out. It,s the last day of the show, you might get a good deal.

This is only a "hobby" to date, though it could have potential to expand, I really cannot justify big expenditure.

Anyway I was at Balmoral on Wed.

I was an agricultural mechanic on large farms during the 80's when these handlers were in their infancy. The most bombproof at the time IMO was the Matbro Ram 40, well built. low tech, even size wheels and not even Telescopic, but it will do everything you want.

Its pivot steer with two tractor back axles front and rear, so no expensive steering repairs or outboard planetary gears.

Worth a look?

i have seen the matbro 250 getting high praise on the farming forum if i recall, for its ruggedness and simplicty

Is the Matbro 40 the one like the Moffat MFT Either MF or Ford based) was ie a basic tractor chassis with a loader mounted to the rear, with an arm each side of a slightly narrower cab?

Ram 40 was predecessor to the TR200 / 250's.... excellent bit of kit, pivot steer, central telescopic boom, very simple....

Exactly right. The problem was that as they evolved, just like all the others, they became more reliant on electronics. So if you ever find an early one in good nick it will cost less to keep running and save a lot of frustration. Ford axles and Ford engine. Standard multi bank spool valves if I remember correctly. Simples. Built in Tetbury.
