You're going to wish you'd never asked! Yew is GRRReat firewood. As others have said it burns hot as heck and for hours too. Only needs a year to season if split into sensible pieces, i.e. smaller than you would conifer for example.

 

Giving it to woodturners? Yes - if you can. My experience is that they're a fussy lot who seem to expect wood to be almost artificially blemish-free; 'it's got a crack', 'it's not perfectly round', 'can you rip that 36" x 14" piece for me?'! I have one contact who tears his hair out trying to talk up the 'free' aspect of the stuff (I give it away out of love of the wood) to persuade them to take it but he can't seem to beat them down, so firewood it is.

I haven't had any problem with spitting.

WOOD TURNERS ARE THE BIGGEST PAIN IN THE AR$E WHEN YOU HAVE A WOOD PILE.

 

they pull it all aprt and leave you with a big mess and then haggle over pennies..

 

chuck the wood in the splitter every time now... firewood for all of it

I have never felled a Yew tree, if my suggestions for remedial work are not acceptable to the client I simply won't take on the job. I also make a point after surgery or hedge trimming to take and transplant as many cuttings as I can.
