Very confused, any ideas?

I was given an old set of hedge trimmers (stihl hs60 av) which needed some work to get going again.

I dont know if they would be even powerful enough for me to use if i could get them going but i thought it would be a challenge. :001_rolleyes:

The obvious stuff i could see was the HT lead pulled out of coil, pull cord broke, rusted blades seized together, av mounts broken, screws missing etc

So in my wisdom I have stripped them right down to bits, cleaned, sharpened and replaced and fixed where needed.

BUT will they fire up NO, I cant understand it :confused1: I have a good spark, good fuel getting into cylinder, clean filters but i cant get them to fire?

Its not the end of the world if i just sell them for parts, but to have put so much effort into them i would like to see them running, cant understand it - any ideas?

Has it got a new plug and after pulling it over is the plug wet with petrol ?

 

I didnt put a new plug in it because the new plugs i have were slightly different so i cleaned the old one up with a fine wire brush and tested it out of the socket, it seemed to spark well/strong so i thought it would be fine? yes it is wet with fuel when i remove it.

Do you think the coil could be at fault with maybe a weak spark? but it doesnt look very weak? what tests could i do with a multimter- anyone know?

Simplest way to check a spark is to take an old spark plug, open up the gap to 3mm -4mm and then use this to check the spark, if it is OK, it will jump the larger gap.

 

Has the motor got good compression, have you tried pulling it over with the throttle pulled wide open - that can often get a hard to start engine going.

 

Heating the plug up and trying to start it can help.

Yes good compression, yes tried starting with throttle open.

Going over it in my head one thing i didnt do is spend time setting the gap between the magnet and coil and it could be probably ajusted more-would this give a weak spark? although it looks ok. just knit picking really :confused1:

Takes me back to the days when I couldnt afford to pay for repairs lol

My old man used to say rub a lead pencil across the points and on the plug contact to aid a weak spark :001_rolleyes:

I will give heating the plug up first a try, should i just give it a few seconds with a blow lamp?

I must admit I get grief from time to time (most weeks) from people who say what are you doing messing about with that! just buy new or its not worth it throw it in the bin! Its not because i am tight - although that could be a factor! I just enjoy fixing things and learning how things work and trapping my fingers and shoving screwdrivers in my hands. you know mans stuff :thumbup1:

To test the carb bung some fuel straight into filter end, if it fires then it's carb. Had this with an 088 turned out flywheel wasn't powerfully enough to give spark.

 

A spark plug may spark outside engine but not inside. Try spuds idea. This will eliminate this.

 

I know what you mean about fixing tools, get self satisfaction from it.
