Oak trunk for beams etc

I have a humongous oak tree to fell coming up soon in Wokingham

The trunk is around 6ft dia and 20ft high (virtually same dia all the way)

It is a crane job, but the trunk is going to be too heavy to lift in one.

What would be the minimum length for it to be of any use?

Cheers...Al

If the quality is good, it's a prime candidate for quarter sawing. Please don't chain mill it, as it could be worth a good deal of money to the right person.

Find a local large mill, or get it to Helmdon sawmills in Northamptonshire. Steve might well buy it from you depending on quality. Two ten foot lengths would be the way to go, and I would expect you'd get around £1000 a length (£5 a hoppus) at the mill.

The other thing you could do is try and quarter it then transport it... As Jon says if you have a decent butt like this that is this diameter and that tall then it should be worth some cash....

Hi Rob

It's not possible to fell the trunk, can only go up and out by crane so quartering is not an option.
