Stihl 084 oiler

Hi all, second post of the night hoping for a bit of help with putting the clutch drum back on my saw.

I was milling the other day and after seeing the side casing was red hot I decided to investigated. The clutch drum was cracked and rubbing causing the heat.

Anyway got a new drum put it back on and it just doesn't seem right. There are two oiler lugs on the bottom of the drum that locate into what I think is the oiler drive. The problem is that when it's all in position and i spin the clutch drum it turns the engine over, i thought the drum is meant to be free wheeling not in direct drive so I'm reluctant to get it up and running.

Probably being over cautious but any help would be appreciated.

You definitely have a problem, if you re assemble the bar and chain as is your chain will move even on tickover.

Your problem lies somewhere between the crank output and the clutch drum, the only parts between those points are the needle bearing and the clutch. The problem should be with one or the other.

Check the needle roller bearing, is it wrecked? Some have a plastic cage and the heat you described will likely have wrecked it.

Check the clutch springs, are the all present do the clutch shoes touch the drum when you assemble it?

Wecome to the forum chopper brown.

If Treequips good ideas dont provide the answer, I think it may be worth checking the oiler drive. You may find that the drive spring ( the metal arm that engages in the slot in the drum) may be fused to the spur gear, which may, in turn be fused to the crank. The heat you described could well have caused this.

This would mean that the clutch drum turns the drive spring which being melted to the gear and the crank, turns the crank.

Just one more opinion, others may have better ideas.

Thanks for your help. I think the drive spring fused to the spur gear sounds about right as all the clutch parts seem fine and if i don't engage the lugs with the oil it turns freely half a turn until it becomes in contact with the oiler drive.

The needle bearing with the plastic casing seems fine, that is if it's the one that centres the clutch drum over the clutch. Anyway i'll have another good look this week, no doubt once i find out what parts i need they wont be available.

Cheers Jim
