Theres about 200 of these trees on the 50 acre site, and local volunteers have recently embarked on a 50 year management plan.

Apparantly 6 different species of bats reside here & a new species of lichen was discovered on one of the pollards.

Think I might just pop back to check on the fung at somepoint :thumbup1:

If your in the area, I'd recommend a visit.

(reckon I can think of someone who might even make a not so local trip )

What an awesome tree

I fear it's doomed now tho, all the new houses and complaints of "my kids play under it and dead bits keep falling off"

Would be interesting to know if this cavity was an entrance to an old managed bee collony (or just an old non occluded stem wound or lost stem)

Similar to ones I saw in the basque, which were man made cavities for retained bees. (though higher up and more cut pronounced)
