Do I buy a new MS460 ?

Just bought an MS460 to use on the bigger stuff I have to ring up. Will get its first outing later this week, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it compares with the smaller saws I currently use. Did a search on here for 460 threads, and judging by the general responses and comments, it would seem that the MS460 is a reasonable choice - I certainly hope so!

Hi Lowerforest and welcome. You,ll find the 460 a cracking saw, keep it sharp and flat out and it a saw that's hungry for cutting:thumbup:

I've got both 20 and 25 inch bar/chain setups for it, so I might even be able to gracefully retire my dear old 254xp 18" (or at least give it some time off!) when its time to start on the smaller wood once again!

I need to cross cut butts for firewood I have a fair bit comming in at 2-3ft . I currently use a ms390 . But seems a bit cruel and would be more efficent with slightly bigger saw. I Find a 660 a bit heavy for more than a few hours. I can cut for 6 or so hours with a 390. I am not a big fan of electronics especially if they are know to give bother so that sort of rules out the 441. My favorite saw was a husky about 4 years ago till it blew so would consider another. Advice appreciated from you pro loggers.

 

i strongly recomend the husky 576xp with a 24 inch bar

Deffinatly worth it Steve... However I strongly recommend a 66 with a 20" bar. Not much heavier than a 460 . I use one as my main ground saw everyday now .

So with plan B in place I just need to decide between a 460 or a 660 or a 576xp or a 7900 makita . I have used a 460 and 660 so just need to try a 576 and a 7900. Thanks for all the advice believe it or not I am actually getting closer to buying a shiney new toy

I used a makita 7900 a few years back, was impressed but not sure what they are like after a few years of abuse. Would get a 372 over the 576 if you can find

You won't like my MS460 then - I turned it into a MS460 GTi, quite easy really. Fitted a twin port exhast, removed the 'H' restrictor to open up the fuel, so it will 4-stroke at 13.5K rpm but clears back to 2T under load, drinks twice as much fuel. Fitted double dogs and for 'fun' fitted a 3/8-8T sprocket and a 16" bar with a good chain - the performance is awesome, well lets say it makes my MS 390 and 266XP perform like 'push and go toys.

 

I have used it to cut up a 3ft oak bough from both sides, then cut into blocks as it has 'wavy grain' and won't split easy.
