Gransfors recommend you only use the large splitting maul for knocking in wedges as all the other axes do not have the correct poll to act as a sledge hammer. Greenman Bushcraft have them for about £76 plus delivery, seem to be £99 most other places.

 

I am tempted as I bought the Gransfors small forest axe before Christmas and absolutely love it - a real quality piece of kit.

I've been using my Gransfors large splitting axe to knock in felling wedges for a few years with no troubles. I've also used the forest axe for the same purpose. I think what they are getting at is not to use the axes for 'splitting' wedges. A felling wedge slips in easy with little resistance compared to a splitting wedge.

 

I've often thought about using a hammer instead, but its just something extra to drag about that can only be used for that purpose. An axe on the other hand.......

 

Seeing as the OP is in Sweden, i'd go and treat yourself to a Gransfors Bruks.

Gransfors small forest axe is my fave choice for a multiple use handy tool.

 

Cool, Why do you find it usefull? I was looking at the medium forest axe . .

 

I dont like the weight of splitting mauls for carrying around, although they might be more efficient per swing

 

It will definatly be a GB axe, as i can swing by the factory next time we visit my girlfriends family home in the north, Cheers on the heads up on that Xersuis:thumbup:

Gransfors only recommend the big-ass splitting maul for wedges, but as someone has said, I think that means metal splitting wedges (it has a hardened poll).

 

For knocking in plastic wedges or hi-lifts you'd be fine with any of their stuff.

 

They are beautiful pieces of kit, and it would be a great investment.

 

 

For the size trees you normally tackle Josh, I would recommend the mini-hatchet. You can whittle some wedges out of match-sticks.
