Knocking the Top Out of a Poplar

Its on open forum, I think as long as we can keep it civil opinions should be expressed, and feedback given wether negative or positive.

I just hope flaming ace does not think I am some holier than thou ass, because believe me I have a life membership into the tonking club and do enjoy the dark arts of ***** cutting.

Thanks, hopefully after 1530 mine will be as good as yours.

I agree, it's an open forum as long as it isn't personnal I have no problem with people throwing their opinions in, its how we learn stuff, that and doing.

However someone that signs on, doesn't introduce themselves and posts something so stupid as that (both of the questions had been covered if you read the post) is just being a pain in the proverbial, in my opinion.

I apologise for not introducing myself, i had no idea that that was the etiquette. My name is Jp.

As for both questions being covered, i think you'll find that the first question was not answered, the poster had in fact merely stated the reasons for 'why not spike the tree'. Being a relatively inexperienced climber, i was interested in finding out what the benefits of using spikes in that particular situation were. Maybe my bad for being too blunt.

Was my post really so stupid, i'm not sure that making things personal on forums is necessarily productive.

Job last week classic old greenhouse below big conifer . Client said he didnt care about it... I'm afraid i did and made sure nothing touched it . Matter of honour for me , others may differ . :001_smile:

I agree, it's a matter of principal for me. Why break something if you don't need to? Cutting the tree in 2 or 3 sections would not take that much extra time and would actually save time for the groundies as there is smaller bits to process. Also a tree with so many branches wouldn't need spikes to make it any easier at all.

cheers for the comments guys

about the spikes, i used spikes to knock this top out because i found it safer to stand there comfortably on spikes and cut it rather than without, thats the main reason, yeah i probably didnt need them, like said before there are plenty of branches, its just the way i found most comfortable to do the cuts.

As for breaking the hedge, yeah the owner didnt mind, and it didn't really smash it once all the brash was pulled off it popped up a bit (plus i just wanted to knock a big top out to tell you the truth :)). None of it had to be chipped or taken away, when me and granddad get back in there to do some other trees we will have the fordson with loader so it will just get pushed up and burnt and the firewood lifted out, so saving time for the groundie isnt really an issue.

Threads like these are awesome its great to see how everyone goes about jobs, and gives a good discussion, thanks for all the input :)

Fair comments and I am glad your not taking it badly :thumbup1:

It would surprise you how many people can't take constructive criticism in any way but badly.

Taking a big top out is a good one for getting the adrenalin moving but I would still prefer to finish the job instead of leaving half a tree:001_rolleyes:
