3 Phase help

Hi,

I have bought a tidy 3 phase motor, hydraulic pump with a good sized reservoir with a view to seeing if it will power a log splitter instead of running a tractor.

The unit allegedly came off an industrial paper guillotine and I can understand the rework I need to do to the hydraulic circuits but have no idea about 3 phase so need some advice...

The motor is 415v 5hp 7.9 amp. The plate on the motor gives two wiring diagrams for the starter; Star Delta and Direct On Line. I have had a look at star delta control panels and can understand how and why they are the preferred option but they are silly money new (especially just to see if it will work). The people I have talked to all say go for Star Delta (but based on experience of much bigger motors).

Any thoughts?

Anybody got a second hand one?

Hi

Would it be possible to contact the manufacturers for information regarding how best to start it?

Whilst in the RN most of our motors were star connected and just had a direct on-line 3 phase starter with over current trips, be aware that a motor can take up to eight times running current for a short time when starting!

Why do you need star delta. If you dont have enough 3 phase hire a 30 kva diesel generator for the day and connect direct on line to test it. The reason for star delta is to soft start ie genset is too small. Or are u thinking of a transwave rectifier so u can run it from 240v.

Agreed. Unless someone says different I do think star delta is the way forward.

There has been a few on ebay that look ok but I am not that sure of the spec I need so some help in this department would be very much appreciated. Suggestions on any other places a suitable starter might be hiding would also be good.

I have mains three phase. I don't have either starter at the moment and did not want to invest in the wrong kit for the sake of asking. If there are two choices I have a habit of always picking the wrong one. :001_smile:

5 horse motor on a 415v supply will not need a star-delta start up, wire it through a DOL starter with the right overloads and youl have no problem, if you arent sure about what your doing get a sparkie that knows about industrial 3phase, most house sparkies havent a clue. A hydraulic pump running on a spool valve setup wont draw much current on startup cos theres not really a large load on the motor
