Hi, could anybody give me a guide to the value of a hopefully sound oak log for milling, in old money, 10ft long by 28inch quarter girth which I make about 54 hoppus ft , I think thats about 2 cu. metres in new money. Log is fresh felled in the wood alongside a roadway. Thanks.

3-5£ cubic / hoppus foot so around £150 road side, but probably at least £150 in firewood so take your pick.

i'd buy it if i were nearer after some oak saw logs but want an artic load!

The problem you've got is that it isn't worth the haulage for a fixed mill for a single log.

If you can get it to the mill, you might get a fair price, or if you can find any takers with portable mills - oak is at least saleable and although 10ft is a bit short you can get some decent boards out of something that size.
