Hi i'm abit new to arb and just got my cs38 and39, so it's all new at the moment-and expensive! i just wonderd if anyone can offer any advise on lowering silver birches? from what i can gather these trees are quite shallow rooted and alot of the time very thin, also if you were to lower one of these trees they seem to rot quite easy, would painting the wound with arberex help? any help is most welcome:001_smile:

Yes they are shallow rooted. The wood is thin and bendy, and the bark is easly damaged. Good tree to gain confidence. In fifteen years of climbing and15 stone i have yet to break an anchor. Standard lowering with a rope, pully and slings will cope with silver birch.

Take your time and learn from your mistakes.

For what it's worth, IMO you should not reduce silver birches..

They grow fast and easy, and of course can be lifted etc, however I would not reduce them, I always favor removal before reduction as they will look crap afterwards, will induce decay and often die as a result.

depends who does the reduction

Those birches looked awesome Josharb!

painting wounds is a big no no matey, its something that arborists used to do many moons ago but the paint actually seals in pathogens rather than protecting the tree from them!

just give it a go and try and make it look like Josharbs trees!
