That's some serious adaptive growth going on there Iain.

Be real interesting to do further investigation on the Trunk base.

 

 

Is it on main road verge or private, what's with all the holes in the soil?

the trial pits are due to some recent works where a trench wen through that area , so investigations as to root damage disturbance.

 

might try the thermal imaging on this one !!

Over here I would be thinking Agrobacterium tumefaciens, a worldwide soil borne bacteria with a wide host range.

 

Soooooooo, this looks like a nonwoodland area, nonnaturalized, what's with the fracture pruning?

Ah well, my apologies then. I saw the line in the tree and what appeared to have been some work done. With the picture having been taken, I thought perhaps you were finished.
