Wanted- a piece of maple

Since maple is historically pretty scarce beech was probably the traditional choice. Maple is probably the American first choice.

I have some sycamore drying but not that wide. Can you join a couple of bits together? Does the sycamore need to be dried or can you use green wood? I'm near Ripley so close to you. If you want to give me a ring tommorrow on 07981 905009 Alex

how do you plan on making the butchers block?

its usually made in blocks end grain facing upwards and braced with a frame to stop spliting if you used it just like a board it would warp and eventuakky split.

Ive only seen sycamore blocks but ive heard older ones were made of beech.

I did a job once for a posh Chinese restaurant and whilst there they asked me if I could level up their chopping block in the kitchen. Did it in situ with a 440, chips everywhere. It was definitely syc or maple of some sort.

Maples (sycamore and, I believe, the native field maple) are naturally antiseptic, which would make sense for kitchenware.

 

Beech is close grained, clean and doesn't taint food so would also be a logical choice.

 

Agree that it's usually end grain though - that way the knife cuts go down the grain, which closes up. If you cut across the grain on a face it won't do this, and will inevitably bow or crack.

 

I don't have either in that width I'm afraid.

Someone made us a beautiful table out of burred maple, it was felled in Letchworth, years ago, hope you find some, keep asking...
